Family Tree 8 Manual

Family history’s big business as far as the internet’s concerned: just imagine, details of your ancestors’ lives (as well as some of your own records) are all publicly available online – for a price, of course. The big websites like Ancestry have wrapped up the market in online record archives, but the internet offers more than just a digital database, with family history themed social networks making it possible to get in touch with far-flung relatives and distant cousins.

MyHeritage.com is one such website, and one of its key selling points is that it provides this – Family Tree Builder – for no cost. The catch is that you’ll need a MyHeritage.com account to use it, but as this needn’t cost you a cent, it’s no major drawback, and you’ll be able to use the program to track down possible matches with other MyHeritage.com members quickly and easily, even if it costs a pretty penny in terms of upgrading to a Premium subscription in order to actually merge those records into your tree.

If you ignore the tie-in, then Family Tree Builder is actually one of the better free programs for recording and organising your family history, along with any associated documents and media files. It has everything you’d expect of a genealogy program, plus some features that put it on a par with paid-for titles. Asus router remote log server issues. Most impressive of all is the image-handling tools, which feature facial detection allowing you to quickly and easily tag photos of various family members - this feature requires you upload your photos via the Sync tool first, and can take some time to complete. There’s also all the options you need for recording details about your ancestors, plus additional tools like charting and report publishing, mapping and so on.

  • Your family tree. But if you are interested in our unique capabilities of building a family tree in multiple languages, or viewing it in one language while entering data in another, read on. The current version of Family Tree Builder supports the following 12 languages: Additional languages will be added later on according to demand.
  • Family Tree Builder 6.0 did allow photos in the family reports, while Family Tree Builder 7.0 freeware doesn't allow photos in family reports anymore, which I feel, is a serious drawback. Buggy 18 May 2013 16:54, Tom.

Some features are limited for free account holders – you can only upload the first 250 individuals in your tree to the MyHeritage.com website for example, while only the first 50 locations are supported by the mapping tool. Even without these extras, though, Family Tree Builder has many of the tools a budding genealogist needs.

Verdict:

Powerful family history package that’s packed with useful features, but the free version’s limitations do make it less practical for those with larger trees.

Install the latest Windows version FREE from the Offical Microsoft Store. This version will automatically update as new versions become available.

If you have issues with the Windows Store or have a older version of Windows you can download a stand alone installer version here. This version is identical to the Windows Store version but it will require you to manually update to get the latest changes. It does however allow you to run the program on pre-Windows 10 versions of Windows, however as time passes the ability to keep it working on really old versions of Windows may stop working.

If you have a Mac search for FTAnalyzer on the Mac App Store for your region or for a beta version click here.

The simplest Windows 10 install method is to install from the Offical Microsoft App Store. This will then auto update the application when a new version comes out assuming you’ve not turned off this option in the Microsoft App Store app.

Installation is simple with Windows Store Click the link and click Get to get the application or Launch to run the application once installed. Note occassionally the Windows Store glitches and shows you own the product but it’s not installed. If this happens follow these instructions to fix the problem.

You can put a short cut on your desktop by dragging the icon from your start menu to the desktop. This article explains if you are having issues creating a shortcut icon.

Documentation Website

The documentation is similarly in need of some updating. It’s a work in progress and I tend to focus on new features rather than documentation. If anyone would like to assist updating the documentation I’d be happy to accept their assistance.

Facebook, Support Site & Twitter

The Support website is hosted as a page on Facebook. The User Group is also on Facebook. The Twitter account is @FTAnalyzer note I don’t check twitter very often so easiest is to raise an issue on the issues site

Family Tree 8 Manual Pdf

All feedback welcome. Please note this is very much a work in progress, it works for my own Gedcom file however there is no guarantee that other ways of recording data will be consistently handled. If you wish to post error logs and log issues please include a sample gedcom file that demonstrates the problem you are having. I’d like to ensure that it works consistently for every user. Please also note that there is a bias in the program for UK searching as that is where my Ancestors are from. So some defaults may need to be tweaked or turned into user configurable options in later versions. Again let me know what works and what causes you problems.
