Floating Sandbox 1.12 – aka The Fire and Heat update or Trial by Fire – is being released today on GameJolt.com. This new version of the physics simulator introduces thermodynamics, giving players the ability to heat or cool parts of the ships until materials reach their burning and melting points. Particles transfer heat between each other and from/to air and water, and fire spreads by means of heat transfer. A new heat overlay may be activated to display particles’ temperatures on top of a ship:

As is often the case with Floating Sandbox’s physics, most of the heat and fire mechanisms in the game may be fine-tuned by the player via controls in the settings window. Given the sheer number of controls that have been added, however, this time the settings window got an ad-hoc section exclusively for thermodynamics:

Today we’ll be going through a short explanation of all of these settings, in order to allow the end player to make the most out of Floating Sandbox’s 1.12 thermodynamics simulation.

But before we delve into the settings, we need a small background on how thermodynamics has been implemented in Floating Sandbox 1.12.

Floating Sandbox Thermodynamics

In Floating Sandbox particles carry a new physical property – temperature – which indicates the temperature of a particle in Kelvin degrees. The minimum temperature is zero degrees Kelvin (which is theoretically unreachable), while there is no theoretical maximum for the temperature that a particle may have.

Floating Sandbox Game

Temperature, however, is not something that particles directly give or take from their surrounding environment; instead, particles give or take heat, which is a form of energy. The release or intake of an amount of heat by a particle is responsible for a decrease or increase in its temperature, the magnitude of which depends on the specific heat capacity of the material. The specific heat capacity basically tells us how much heat energy a kilogram of the material needs to gain or lose in order to raise or lower its temperature by one degree. In formula:

Where is the amount of heat energy gained or lost, c is the specific heat capacity of the particle’s material, m is the mass of the particle, and the temperature change.

For example, in Floating Sandbox’s universe metals have the lowest specific heat capacity values among all of the materials, while rubber and plastic have the highest. This should come as no surprise if you imagine heating a piece of metal and a piece of plastic with a lighter for a few seconds – which one would you think reaches the highest temperature?

Also, note how in the formula above the temperature change of a material also depends – inversely proportional – on its mass. This is also not a surprise; if you heat with the same lighter one kilo of iron and 100 kilo’s of iron, which of the two masses will reach the highest temperature?

Thermal Conductivity

Now, what happens when two particles – one at temperature T1 and the other at temperature T2 – are in contact with each other?

Our intuition might tell us that they “exchange temperature”, but if you’ve been reading above, you should have guessed by now that what is really exchanged, again, it’s just heat, not temperature. Remember that temperature is a property of a particle, while heat is a quantity that is exchanged.

When two particles are in contact, the amount of heat that they transfer to each other is:

Where k is a constant specific to the material connecting the two particles, named thermal conductivity. In other words, the quantity of heat exchanged is linearly proportional to the difference in temperature, and its magnitude depends on the material. Materials that we commonly refer to as “isolating” materials have very little values of k, while materials that conduct heat quickly – like metals – have large values of k.

Heat and Fire Settings

Now that we’ve established some background on the mechanics of heat transfer in Floating Sandbox 1.12, it’s time to go through the individual settings that allow players to fine-tune the thermodynamics of the game.

Physics

This section contains adjustments for the fundamental constants of thermodynamics.

  • Thermal Conductivity Adjust: this setting increases or decreases the amount of heat energy transferred between two particles connected by a spring; if you have been reading above, higher or lower values of heat energy translate into higher or lower temperature increases, so essentially this setting allows the player to control how fast temperature spreads across a ship.
  • Heat Dissipation Adjust: particles are either in direct contact with air or in direct contact with sea water. In either case, when there is a difference between the temperature of the particle and the temperature of air or water, then there is a transfer of heat (you should have guessed this by now!), and this transfer of heat, in turn, is responsible for an increase or decrease in the particle’s temperature, depending on the particle’s specific heat capacity (also this you should have guessed by now!). This setting dictates how much heat energy a given particle gains or loses when it’s in contact with air or water, for each 1-degree difference of temperature between the particle and air/water. For example, if sea water temperature is quite high (see Water Temperature setting below), higher values of this setting will make ships heat up more quickly, while lower values of this setting will make ships oblivious to water temperature.
  • Burning Point Adjust: materials have their own burning point, which is the temperature above which the material starts combustion. This setting simply allows players to reduce or increase the burning point of all particles on the ship. Very high values will prevent fires from occurring, while very low values will make everything in the ship catch fire immediately.
  • Melting Point Adjust: similarly to the Burning Point Adjust setting described above, this setting allows players to change the temperature at which materials start melting. Note that some materials start burning earlier than they start melting (e.g. Titanium or Carbon), while other materials start melting before they catch fire (e.g. Plastic).
  • Combustion Speed Adjust: once a particle is burning, its molecular structure starts disintegrating (ashes, anyone?), and in Floating Sandbox’s universe, this means the particle and its connected springs decay, i.e. they undergo the same physical changes as when they are rotting underwater – they become weaker and brownier, among other things. Once a particle’s decay has reached a maximum, it will stop burning, exactly like wood stops burning once it’s completely charred. This setting allows the player to control the speed with which burning particles decay; higher values basically make particles pulverize faster when burning, thus shortening the life of flames that originate from that particle.
  • Combustion Heat Adjust: while a particle is burning, it delivers a fixed amount of heat to its neighboring particles, contributing to spreading the fire around the ship. This setting controls this amount of heat generated by fire; higher values heat up neighboring particles more, shortening the time until they reach their burning point. Note that the maximum number of burning particles in a ship is fixed (and controlled via the Max Burning Particles setting explained below), and thus the actual speed with which fire spreads in a ship depends on both Combustion Heat Adjust and Max Burning Particles.

World

This section controls the world temperatures.

  • Air Temperature: controls the…air temperature, in Kelvin (like Celsius degrees, but plus 273,15). Note that the minimum air temperature players can choose is 273,15 Kelvin (zero Celsius degrees), as at this moment Floating Sandbox does not implement the concept of freezing and thus we don’t want to touch that argument with a ten foot pole yet. We might return on this in later updates of the game…
  • Water Temperature: controls the…water temperature. Same considerations as in Air Temperature above.

Electrical

This section controls the coupling between thermodynamics and the electrical sub-system of Floating Sandbox.

  • Heat Generation Adjust: every working electrical particle (generator, light, etc.) produces an amount of heat specific to the particle itself. This specific amount of heat is configured in the electrical materials database; as an example, normal lamps produce 200 Joule/sec (aka 200W), while heating elements (new electrical particles in Floating Sandbox 1.12) produce 25,000 Joule/sec. With this setting players may increase or decrease the default amount of heat, thus increasing or decreasing the chances that neighboring particles may catch fire during the functioning of the electrical particle.

HeatBlaster

This section configures the HeatBlaster© tool, which is used to supply heat to particles – or to remove it when pressing the shift key.

  • Radius: this is the radius of the tool, in meters. Heat is produced/subtracted at its maximum at the center of the radius, and at its minimum on the edge of the radius.
  • Heat: this is the amount of heat produced/subtracted by the tool, in kilo Joules/sec. The default value in Floating Sandbox 1.12 – 2,000 KJoule/sec, or 2,000,000 Watt – is way more than the heat generated by the highest industrial torches – which are rated at around 12,000 Watt – but still this amount of heat requires quite a long time to melt metal.

Fire

This section controls fire and flames.

  • Max Burning Particles: depending on the computer’s graphics card, rendering flames might be quite an expensive operation – this is particularly true with old Intel graphics card, like mine. Too many flames use a lot of GPU resources, causing the FPS rate of the game to drop dramatically. In order to provide an acceptable user experience on low-end hardware – like mine – the default maximum number of flames is set to ~100, but this setting may be used to increase or lower the limit. When this many particles are burning, other particles that have reached their burning point will not catch fire, waiting instead for their turn once one of the other burning particles has completed its combustion process. This limit on the number of particles indirectly controls the speed with which fire may spread across a ship.

The ship will be harmed in a wide range of and remarkable approaches to make the Floating Sandbox game players wonder. Players during playing the Floating Sandbox will feel the vibe of sinking a ship in the 2D model, both the sinking of the body of the player or the development of the ship in general.

Players can watch any progressions that happen because of certain results of the ship’s decimation system that happens. Players can make their very own items utilizing hues and materials that are not the same as the library that has been given previously. Accessible properties running from mass, quality, inflexibility, and different properties that reflect material science in a genuine manner.

In the Floating Sandbox game, the player will board a few conspicuous ships, for example, Titanic and Poseidon. After a ship is stacked in a specific zone they will drift and the player can give the best ship demolition situation, for example, pounding, cutting, turning, flooding with seawater, utilizing bombs, and some more. Every material from the ship utilizes the physical science components as clarified above and the 2D game plan components that are so one of a kind and genuine delineate the mob circumstance when the ship sank because of harm by the hands of abhorrence players.

A few boats will sink quick and moderate contingent upon the degree of the perversion of players in wrecking existing boats. The technique to sink a ship is somewhat impossible to miss and unusual however the sensation felt is genuine and makes players dependent on having the option to keep sinking the boats made.

Floating Sandbox gives its own magnificence and fulfillment esteem, beginning from the appeal of 2D visual depiction that looks reasonable to the utilization of odd highlights that keep the players engaged while crushing the boats in the Floating Sandbox game.
